Oyster Dome

Today was spent hiking up Blanchard Mountain in Bellingham to the Oyster Dome & Bat Caves. Levi & I set out from our house with Boo & Bet, Aaron & Nicole, Liz, & we met up with Elyse once we got there. I'm a bit tired to write much & the photos will describe it better anyways. It's a great hike--highly recommend it on clear days. And of course we finished off the day with dinner at the Boundary Bay Brewery, where some other B'ham friends joined us. I do miss Bellingham.
Bet being camouflage.

Love the pictures too! It looks like a fun hike. Are there cliffs all around the top though? I'm avoiding Mt. Si with the kids because I can just picture the kids running all over darting to the edge!

Hike details:
The trail heads straight up from Chuckanut Drive in Bellingham (south of Larabee State Park) & is about 8 miles roundtrip. Including lunch at the dome, I think it took us about four hours. There's a logging road & parking lot up the other side of Blanchard Mountain that provide an easier & shorter way to the dome.

The dome is a large rock face which over the years house-sized boulders have fallen off & created a maze of tunnels & rocks called the Bat Caves. I've never done a lot of exploring in them, but apparently there's quite a lot of tunnels & small caves (no big ones & I recently read that they think there's currently no bats inhabiting them).
I would say the dome is less safe for kids than the top of Mt. Si. The rock we are sitting on abuptly ends & the sheer edge drops some 200 feet below to the Bat Caves.

Google "Oyster Dome Bellingham" & you'll find lots of info about the hike, except how it got its name! I guess it's because the dome rises right above Samish Bay, which is famous for oysters.

Take the kids to Rachel lake. It is directly across the street from Laraby state park. It is a great hike, safer, and not as long.
